What are Honolulu Senior Advisor's editorial standards?

Our standard is that every fact on the site traces to a primary source, every number carries its date and source, and every facility listing comes from bulk official data rather than marketing.

  • Rules are cited by Hawaii Administrative Rules section or Hawaii Revised Statutes section.
  • Facility data comes only from OHCA rosters, OHCA's inspection index and CMS Care Compare, with the edition date shown.
  • Star ratings appear only for nursing homes, and only as CMS publishes them.
  • Costs come from CareScout's published 2025 Hawaii medians; when no median exists we say so.
  • Cost, rule and program pages carry a Last verified date and are reviewed when sources change.

How do we handle corrections?

If something is wrong, email advisors@honolulusenioradvisor.com with the page and the correction; we check it against the primary source and update the page, usually within a few days.

Facilities can ask us to correct a data error, but we only change a record when the state's or CMS's own data supports it.

How do we treat privacy in public records?

We publish facility-level licensing facts but leave out details that identify private individuals, which is why foster family homes appear only as counts and care home rows show town and ZIP code rather than street addresses or operators' personal names.

Inspection reports are linked to the state's own files, where resident details have already been redacted.

How do referral fees affect our content?

Referral fees do not affect our content: we list every licensed provider, rank none, and write rules and cost pages without reference to who pays us.

When we recommend a type of care, it is based on the situation a family describes, not on which providers pay referral fees.

How often is the data refreshed?

We rebuild the directory each time the Office of Health Care Assurance posts a new roster, roughly quarterly, and refresh CMS nursing home data with each monthly Care Compare release; every page shows the edition date of the data behind it.

Rule, cost and program pages are reviewed when a source changes, such as a new CareScout survey, new VA rates each December or new federal Medicaid standards each year, and carry a Last verified date.

What sources do we treat as primary?

We treat as primary the Hawaii Revised Statutes and Hawaii Administrative Rules, the Department of Health's rosters and inspection index, Med-QUEST, Executive Office on Aging and Department of Human Services publications, CMS datasets, VA rate tables, the Federal Register and the CareScout survey release.

News coverage and secondary websites can point us to a question, but we confirm the answer in a primary source before publishing it, and cite that source on the page.
